Types of Australian Child Visas

Child Visa (Subclass 101) – Offshore

The Child Visa (Subclass 101) is for children who are outside Australia and are the biological, adopted, or stepchild of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. This visa grants permanent residency in Australia.

Permanent residency for children under 18 years of age, full-time students aged over 18 and under 25 years and financially dependent on the parent, or over 18 and unable to work due to a disability.

Allows children to live in Australia permanently with their parent(s).

Child Visa (Subclass 802) – Onshore

The Child Visa (Subclass 802) is for children who are already in Australia and are the biological, adopted, or stepchild of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. This visa allows the child to stay in Australia permanently.

Permanent residency for children already in Australia who are under 18 years of age, full-time students aged over 18 and under 25 years and financially dependent on the parent, or over 18 and unable to work due to a disability.

Allows children to stay in Australia permanently with their parent(s).

Children can apply for Australian citizenship after meeting residency and eligibility requirements.

Adoption Visa (Subclass 102)

The Adoption Visa (Subclass 102) is for children adopted by Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. This visa allows adopted children from overseas to live in Australia permanently with their adoptive parents.

Permanent residency for adopted children.

Children can attend school and later apply for citizenship.

Orphan Relative Visa (Subclass 117 and Subclass 837)

The Orphan Relative Visa allows children whose parents are deceased, permanently incapacitated, or cannot care for them to live in Australia with a relative. The Subclass 117 is for children outside Australia, while Subclass 837 is for children already in Australia.

Grants permanent residency to orphaned children.

Available to children under 18 years of age, single and have no parent able to care for them.

Allows children to live with their relative in Australia and access healthcare and education services.

Dependent Child Visa (Subclass 445)

The Dependent Child Visa (Subclass 445) is a temporary visa for children whose parent is holds a temporary Partner Visa. This visa allows the child to stay in Australia temporarily while their parent’s permanent partner visa is processed.

Temporary residency until the parent’s permanent partner visa is granted.

Children can live, study, and work while in Australia on this visa.

Eligibility Criteria for Child Visas

The child must be the biological, adopted, or stepchild of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. For Orphan Relative Visas, the child must be related to the sponsoring relative.

    The child must be:

  • Under 18 years old, or
  • A full-time student aged between 18 and 25 who is financially dependent on the sponsoring parent, or
  • A child who is 18 or above with a disability.
  • Health and Character Requirements:

    All applicants must meet the health and character requirements which typically involves medical checks and providing police certificates.

Remaining Relative Visa (Subclass 115 and Subclass 835)

The Remaining Relative Visa is for individuals whose close family members are living in Australia as citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. This visa allows them to live in Australia permanently.

Carer Visa (Subclass 116 and Subclass 836)

The Carer Visa allows individuals to move to Australia to care for a relative who has a long-term or permanent medical condition. This visa grants permanent residency to both offshore (Subclass 116) and onshore (Subclass 836) applicants.

Aged Dependent Relative Visa (Subclass 114 and Subclass 838)

The Aged Dependent Relative Visa is for older relatives who are financially dependent on an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen and have no partner. This visa grants permanent residency for both offshore (Subclass 114) and onshore (Subclass 838).
